Lithology and Thickness
It is represented by the moraines of the oldest (first) semi-cover glaciation and synchronous fluvioglacial, alluvial, and lacustrine-alluvial formations. The moraines have a gray color and are composed of coarse rubble boulder material cemented by loamy silt or gravel. Everywhere they are overlain by solifluction slumps, overgrown with grass, and have lost the characteristic hummocky-hilly relief of moraines.
There is a certain regularity in the distribution of these ancient moraines. In the northeast of the ancient moraine (the eastern part of the Muxuy district, the northern part of the Karakul district) covers significant watershed areas at altitudes of 4000 - 5000 m, having a relative elevation of 500-600 m above the bottom of modern valleys and the youngest basins (Karakul). In the Karakul basin, it is either overlain by younger sediments, or rises above the lake level by 100-150 m. In the Central Pamir (valleys of the Akbaytal, Western and Eastern Psharty rivers), the moraines of the oldest glaciation are adjacent to the sides of modern valleys, and are covered by younger formations. In the South-Eastern Pamir, the oldest moraines are predominantly within the boundaries of ancient accumulation zones (Alichur, Koshagyl-Aksuy, Salangur-Gurumdin, Zorkul) and fill the bottoms of ancient valleys, where in the center the moraines are covered by younger deposits.
To the moraines of the oldest glaciation belong the deposits that form the Tupchak plateau in the Muxu-Hingou interfluve. They are the result of the activity of the ancient Muxuy glacier, the accumulation area of which was located in the vicinity of the sources of the Muxu river and the Fedchenko glacier.
In the upper reaches of the Kokuibel river, in the basin of the Murghab river, the conjunction of the oldest moraines with alluvial terraces is noted. The terraces are composed of well-rounded gravels up to 50-100 m thick. In the lower parts of the lateral tributaries of the Aksu river, the conjunction of ancient moraine and lacustrine-alluvial formations is clearly expressed. The latter are represented by thin-bedded, dense, hard clays with thin layers of sand and small pebbles.
